Victory and podiums for the BMW M 1000 RR in WorldSBK and FIM EWC: Successful Super Weekend for BMW Motorrad Motorsport at Assen and Le Mans.

Assen / Le Mans. Two World Championship events with the BMW M 1000 RR in one weekend – and much celebration at BMW Motorrad Motorsport on a truly ‘Super Weekend’. At the third round of the 2024 FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) at Assen (NED), Toprak Razgatlioglu (TUR) and the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team celebrated a sensational victory in the second main race on Sunday after finishing second on Saturday. In the FIM Endurance World Championship, the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team started the 2024 season with a second-place finish at the Le Mans (FRA) 24 Heures Motos.

WorldSBK at Assen.

At the WorldSBK event at Assen, Razgatlioglu was on course for victory in the first main race on Saturday. In extremely changeable conditions, starting from third place, he was on his way to taking the lead when the race was red-flagged, thus finishing second on the podium. A challenging Superpole race on Sunday morning didn’t deter him. Razgatlioglu finished ninth and had to start the second race in the afternoon from that position. However, ‘El Turco’ charged through the field and took the lead for the first time on the eighth lap. In the final stages, he secured the top spot definitively, thus earning Razgatlioglu his third victory with the BMW M 1000 RR following the successes at Barcelona (ESP). After Assen, he is in second place in the championship standings.

Razgatlioglu’s teammate Michael van der Mark (NED) also fought for podium positions at his Assen home race. Starting from 13th place, he finished seventh in the shortened first race. In the Superpole race, he was the best BMW rider, finishing eighth. In the second main race, van der Mark was among the contenders in the leading group before finishing sixth. Due to a penalty, he was classified as ninth. In the Bonovo action BMW Racing Team, Scott Redding (GBR) secured two top-ten finishes, eighth in race one and tenth in the Superpole race. The best result for his teammate Garrett Gerloff (USA) was eleventh place in the Superpole race, followed by twelfth place in race two.

FIM EWC at Le Mans.

The famous 24 Heures Motos at Le Mans marked the opening round of the 2024 FIM EWC. The BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team, led by Team Manager Werner Daemen (BEL), made a strong start to the new season with the #37 BMW M 1000 RR. The three regular riders, Markus Reiterberger (GER), Ilya Mikhalchik (UKR), and Sylvain Guintoli (FRA), secured second place on the podium. The trio started the twice-around-the-clock marathon from fifth place. With flawless performances from the riders and the team’s excellent work in the pit, the #37 quickly climbed into the podium positions and was already in second place on Saturday after a few hours of racing. The team maintained this position until the finish on Sunday afternoon.

In the FIM EWC Superstock class, the Tecmas-MRP-BMW Racing Team fought for its second Le Mans victory with the #9 BMW M 1000 RR. Starting from second place in class, Kenny Foray (FRA), Jan Bühn (GER), Loïc Arbel (FRA), and Hannes Soomer (EST) were temporarily in the lead. After a crash during the night, they worked their way back up to fourth place in class, however due to a technical issue, the #9 bike retired prematurely.

Marc Bongers, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director: “I am extremely satisfied – it has been a superb weekend. Of course, I could only partly follow Le Mans from Assen, but I watched it until 1 a.m. on Saturday night and from 6 a.m. on Sunday morning. It’s great that the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team secured P2 there. We were also a bit lucky with issues at other teams, but that’s also part of a 24-hour race. After finishing third last year and second this year, you can imagine what the goal is for next year. It has been a great start to the FIM EWC 2024.

Here at Assen, it was my home race and a mega event for me personally. The many fans, including the many Turkish fans, created a fantastic atmosphere. On Saturday, we were disappointed not to have a win in the first main race because we were very close but it showed that we have the pace to make it. The Superpole Race was slightly disappointing; all four BMWs had tyre issues, resulting in positions eight to eleven, but we made up for it in the second main race. It was a great fight at the front with seven or eight bikes within a second, and Toprak and Mickey right in the middle of it. In the end, we celebrated another victory with Toprak and are now also in the top group of the championship. Mickey’s sixth place was strong too, even though he was unfortunately moved back. We saw that the bike has the performance, not only with Toprak, even though he squeezes out that extra bit. We take these positive boosts with us.”

Toprak Razgatlioglu, ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team (SP: 3 / R01: 2 / SP Race: 9 / R02: 1): “I am very happy. We did a very good job this weekend, especially in race two. It was not easy to take the win but in every lap I pushed hard. Everyone was working so hard this weekend and we finally won in race two. It was my first victory at Assen in the Superbike class, and also the first win here for BMW so I am very happy. It was not really important that I started from P9 because if you are really fast this is not a problem. The only problem was that after the first corner, Alex Lowes almost crashed and I closed the gas. After that, I tried to pass all the riders step by step. I felt confident and especially after ten laps I had very good pace. When the rain came, I just closed the gas because I did not want to take a risk. I just followed Alvaro Bautista who is more experienced than me. Then I started to push again. I wanted to win this weekend and I did.”

Michael van der Mark, ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team (SP: 13 / R01: 7 / SP Race: 8 / R02: 9): “I think we should be quite happy with the results this weekend. This morning in the Superpole race, the goal was to be in the top nine and we managed to do it so we had a better start position for race two. I then had a good start and gained some places straight away. I had good pace and the top group was just in front of me. At some point it started raining again in the middle sector. We had some really nice battles and it was great to fight with the guys in front. I struggled a bit at the end of the race with the riding style and fell back a bit into my old habit. I tried to push too hard to follow the guys. Then at the end I got a time penalty. It was a shame to lose P6 but it is what it is. If you look back on the weekend we showed that we are strong. It was also fantastic to see Toprak taking another win today so I am pretty sure that soon we will have two BMWs on the podium.”

Scott Redding, Bonovo action BMW Racing Team (SP: 15 / R01: 8 / SP Race: 10 / R02: DNF): “The warm up was very cold, but the Superpole Race was pretty good. I managed to find a better feeling again from yesterday which was the goal. It was a lot to play for with the tyres. Everyone went more or less with the same tyre, but it was dropping a lot. We could see that with the lap times and the performance of everyone but I actually felt quite good. The changes we made from yesterday to today were positive so going into race two I had a bit more confidence. I felt ready for the race. My start was ok, but I was stuck a little bit with two guys, struggling to pass them but then while braking into the last corner I lost the front, which I was a bit upset about because I felt I had good pace today for another top-ten or maybe even more. I’m just upset with that. I want to apologize to the team, they’ve been great. We’ll come back for Misano and try again.”

Garrett Gerloff, Bonovo action BMW Racing Team (SP: 17 / R01: 16 / SP Race: 11 / R02: 12): “Today was better than yesterday. It was nice to just be higher up the order but I’m still so far back it’s getting frustrating. I’m trying different solutions to the things we’re struggling with, but it hasn’t been very clear. I’m pushing but it’s not coming yet. We just have to keep working and see if we can make some improvements for the next race.”

Werner Daemen, Team Manager BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team: “I am very proud that we finished in second place. All three riders made a tremendous job. Nobody crashed, we had some difficulties in the night when it was very cold but all three riders coped with the conditions and I am very proud of them. They went for it over the entire week, worked together well and we had a very good atmosphere in the team. We showed that we are a strong team and I think that the second place is just the start of a fantastic season. I am hundred percent sure that we can fight for the victory in Spa, Suzuka and Le Castellet.”

Sylvain Guintoli, BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team (2nd place 24 Heures Motos): “It was a good weekend. In the end we finished second and we have to be happy with that. We’ve learned a lot and it has been my first experience with the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team with Markus and Ilya. It has been a good experience. It’s a bit of a shame that we didn’t win because we wanted to bring it home but I’m sure that all the experience gained during this weekend and this race, which was pretty tough, will help us to get better in the future. It’s a good base to build on for the rest of the season.”

Markus Reiterberger, BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team (2nd place 24 Heures Motos): “We are very satisfied with the second place. Of course, we would have liked to win, but in such a tough, long race, with so much happening, so many crashes and mistakes, we did quite well. We had good pace, and especially at night, we were very fast when it was really cold. It was a real challenge due to the cold and tricky conditions. Thanks to the team and my teammates who gave it their all. I believe we have shown that we can be contenders in the World Championship. We also know where we need to make adjustments to get even better. Overall, it was a successful weekend with the second place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.”

Ilya Mikhalchik, BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team (2nd place Heures Motos): “I am really happy about the result. It has been a very difficult race, especially in the night stints when it was almost zero degrees outside. It was a bit cold to ride the bike and the conditions were tricky but even then our bike performances really well, the tyres were working well and everything was okay. We were fighting for the podium places and in the end we got P2 so for sure we are happy. Thanks to the entire crew who worked through all the night and especially thanks to my team-mates who were really fast and did their best in all the stints, no matter what the conditions were.”

Assen / Le Mans. Zwei Weltmeisterschafts-Events mit der BMW M 1000 RR an einem Wochenende – und viel Jubel bei BMW Motorrad Motorsport an einem echten Super-Weekend. Bei der dritten Runde der FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) 2024 in Assen (NED) feierten Toprak Razgatlioglu (TUR) und das ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team nach Platz zwei am Samstag einen sensationellen Sieg im zweiten Hauptrennen am Sonntag. In der FIM Endurance World Championship startete das BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team mit Platz zwei bei den 24 Heures Motos in Le Mans (FRA) in die Saison 2024.

 

WorldSBK in Assen.

Beim WorldSBK-Event in Assen war Razgatlioglu bereits im ersten Hauptrennen am Samstag auf Siegkurs. Bei extrem wechselhaften Bedingungen war er, von Platz drei gestartet, gerade auf dem Weg, sich die Führung zu holen, als das Rennen mit roter Flagge abgebrochen wurde. So belegte er Platz zwei auf dem Podium. Ein schwieriges Superpole Race am Sonntagvormittag brachte ihn nicht aus dem Konzept. Razgatlioglu wurde Neunter und musste daher auch das zweite Rennen am Nachmittag von dieser Position starten. Doch „El Turco“ sprintete durchs Feld nach vorn und setzte sich in der achten Runde erstmals in Führung. In der Schlussphase sicherte er sich den Spitzenplatz endgültig, und so holte Razgatlioglu nach den Erfolgen in Barcelona (ESP) seinen dritten Sieg mit der BMW M 1000 RR. In der Weltmeisterschaftswertung liegt er nach Assen auf dem zweiten Platz.

Razgatlioglus Teamkollege Michael van der Mark (NED) kämpfte bei seinem Heimspiel in Assen ebenfalls um die Podiumspositionen mit. Von Startplatz 13 holte er im verkürzten ersten Rennen den siebten Platz. Im Superpole Race war er als Achter bester BMW Fahrer. Im zweiten Hauptrennen gehörte van der Mark zu den Protagonisten in der Spitzengruppe, ehe er als Sechster ins Ziel kam. Aufgrund einer Strafe wurde er als Neunter gewertet. Im Bonovo action BMW Racing Team holte Scott Redding (GBR) als Achter in Rennen eins und Zehnter im Superpole Race zwei Top-10-Platzierungen. Das beste Ergebnis seines Teamkollegen Garrett Gerloff (USA) war Rang elf im Superpole Race, gefolgt von Position zwölf in Rennen zwei.

FIM EWC in Le Mans.

Die berühmten 24 Heures Motos in Le Mans markierten den Auftakt der FIM EWC 2024. Dem BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team um Team Manager Werner Daemen (BEL) gelang mit der #37 BMW M 1000 RR ein starker Start in die neue Saison. Die drei Stammfahrer Markus Reiterberger (GER), Ilya Mikhalchik (UKR) und Sylvain Guintoli (FRA) holten den zweiten Platz auf dem Podium. Das Trio ging vom fünften Platz in den Zwei-Mal-um-die-Uhr-Marathon. Mit einer fehlerfreien Performance der Fahrer und der bewährt hervorragenden Arbeit des Teams in der Box kam die #37 schnell auf Podiumskurs und lag bereits am Samstag nach wenigen Rennstunden auf Rang zwei. Die Position ließ sich die Mannschaft auch bis zum Zieleinlauf am Sonntagnachmittag nicht mehr nehmen.

In der Superstock-Klasse der FIM EWC kämpfte das Tecmas-MRP-BMW Racing Team um seinen zweiten Le-Mans-Sieg mit der #9 BMW M 1000 RR. Von Startplatz zwei in der Klasse lagen Kenny Foray (FRA), Jan Bühn (GER), Loïc Arbel (FRA) und Hannes Soomer (EST) zeitweise in Führung. Nach einem Sturz in der Nacht arbeiteten sie sich wieder nach vorn bis auf Rang vier in der Klasse. Aufgrund eines technischen Defekts schied die #9 dann jedoch vorzeitig aus.

Stimmen nach dem Rennwochenende.

 

Marc Bongers, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Direktor: „Ich bin extrem zufrieden – das war ein superschönes Wochenende. Le Mans konnte ich natürlich von Assen aus nur zum Teil verfolgen, aber ich habe es Samstagnacht bis ein Uhr und Sonntagmorgen ab sechs Uhr angeschaut. Es ist klasse, dass das BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team dort P2 eingefahren hat. Wir hatten dabei auch ein bisschen Glück mit Problemen bei anderen Teams, aber auch darauf kommt es bei einem 24-Stunden-Rennen an. Nach Platz drei im vergangenen Jahr und Rang zwei in diesem Jahr kann man sich ausrechnen, was das Ziel für nächstes Jahr ist. Es war ein toller Start in die FIM EWC 2024.

Hier in Assen war es mein Heimspiel und für mich persönlich ein mega Event. Die vielen Fans, darunter auch die vielen türkischen Fans, haben für eine gigantische Atmosphäre gesorgt. Am Samstag waren wir fast enttäuscht, im ersten Hauptrennen keinen Sieg zu haben, denn wir waren nicht mehr weit davon entfernt. Doch es hat gezeigt, dass wir die Pace haben, um es zu schaffen. Das Superpole Race war leicht enttäuschend, dort hatten alle vier BMW Probleme mit dem Reifen und entsprechend waren es die Positionen acht bis elf. Aber im zweiten Hauptrennen haben wir es dann wettgemacht. Es war ein super Fight an der Spitze mit sieben, acht Bikes innerhalb einer Sekunde und Toprak und Mickey mittendrin. Am Ende haben wir einen weiteren Sieg mit Toprak gefeiert und sind nun auch in der Meisterschaft ganz vorn dabei. Auch der sechste Platz von Mickey war stark, auch wenn er dann leider zurückversetzt wurde. Wir haben gesehen, dass das Bike die Performance hat. Nicht nur bei Toprak, auch wenn er das Extra-Quäntchen herausholt. Diese positiven Boost nehmen wir mit.“

Toprak Razgatlioglu, ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team (SP: 3 / R01: 2 / SP Race: 9 / R02: 1): „Ich bin sehr glücklich, wir haben an diesem Wochenende einen sehr guten Job gemacht, besonders im zweiten Rennen. Es war nicht einfach, den Sieg zu holen, aber in jeder Runde habe ich hart gepusht. Jeder hat an diesem Wochenende so hart gearbeitet, und schließlich haben wir das zweite Rennen gewonnen. Es war mein erster Sieg in Assen in der Superbike-Klasse und auch der erste Sieg hier für BMW. Also bin ich sehr happy. Es hat keine Rolle gespielt, dass ich von P9 gestartet bin, denn wenn du wirklich schnell bist, ist das kein Problem. Das einzige Problem war, dass nach der ersten Kurve Alex Lowes fast gestürzt wäre und ich vom Gas gegangen bin. Danach habe ich versucht, alle Fahrer nach und nach zu überholen. Ich fühlte mich sehr gut und vor allem nach zehn Runden hatte ich eine sehr gute Pace. Als der Regen kam, bin ich einfach vom Gas gegangen, weil ich kein Risiko eingehen wollte. Ich bin einfach Alvaro Bautista gefolgt, der erfahrener ist als ich. Dann habe ich wieder angefangen zu pushen. Ich wollte an diesem Wochenende gewinnen, und das habe ich geschafft.“

Michael van der Mark, ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team (SP: 13 / R01: 7 / SP Race: 8 / R02: 9): „Ich denke, wir können mit den Ergebnissen an diesem Wochenende ziemlich zufrieden sein. Heute Morgen im Superpole-Rennen war das Ziel, unter den ersten neun zu sein, und wir haben es geschafft. Also hatten wir eine bessere Startposition für das zweite Rennen. Dann hatte ich einen guten Start und habe sofort einige Plätze gutgemacht. Ich hatte eine gute Pace und war an der Spitzengruppe vor mir dran. Irgendwann fing es wieder an, im mittleren Sektor zu regnen. Wir hatten einige wirklich schöne Duelle, und es war großartig, mit den Jungs vorne zu kämpfen. Am Ende des Rennens hat mir mein Fahrstil ein paar Schwierigkeiten bereitet und ich bin wieder in meine alten Gewohnheiten verfallen. Ich habe versucht, zu hart zu pushen, um an den Jungs dranzubleiben. Am Schluss habe ich noch eine Zeitstrafe bekommen. Es war schade, den sechsten Platz zu verlieren, aber es ist wie es ist. Wenn man auf das Wochenende zurückblickt, haben wir gezeigt, dass wir stark sind. Es war auch fantastisch zu sehen, wie Toprak heute einen weiteren Sieg eingefahren hat. Also bin ich mir ziemlich sicher, dass wir bald zwei BMWs auf dem Podium haben werden.“

Scott Redding, Bonovo action BMW Racing Team (SP: 15 / R01: 8 / SP Race: 10 / R02: DNF): „Das Warm-Up war sehr kalt, und das Superpole-Rennen lief dann ziemlich gut. Es ist mir gelungen, das Gefühl von gestern weiter zu verbessern, und das war das Ziel. Mit den Reifen war es ein bisschen ein Glücksspiel. Alle sind mehr oder weniger mit dem gleichen Reifen gefahren, aber der hat stark abgebaut. Das konnten wir anhand der Rundenzeiten und der Leistung aller sehen. Aber eigentlich habe ich mich ganz gut gefühlt. Die Veränderungen, die wir von gestern auf heute vorgenommen haben, waren positiv. Als ich also ins zweite Rennen ging, hatte ich etwas mehr Selbstvertrauen. Ich fühlte mich bereit für das Rennen. Mein Start war in Ordnung, aber ich steckte ein wenig hinter zwei Jungs fest und hatte Mühe, sie zu überholen. Aber dann verlor ich beim Anbremsen in der letzten Kurve die Front. Das hat mich ein bisschen geärgert, weil ich das Gefühl hatte, dass ich heute eine gute Pace für ein weiteres Top-10-Ergebnis oder vielleicht sogar noch mehr hatte. Ich bin einfach nur sauer darüber. Ich möchte mich beim Team entschuldigen, sie waren großartig. Wir kommen in Misano zurück und versuchen es noch einmal.“

Garrett Gerloff, Bonovo action BMW Racing Team (SP: 17 / R01: 16 / SP Race: 11 / R02: 12): „Heute war besser als gestern. Es war schön, einfach weiter vorne zu sein, aber ich bin immer noch so weit hinten, dass es frustrierend wird. Ich versuche verschiedene Lösungen für die Dinge, mit denen wir zu kämpfen haben, aber der Weg war noch nicht ganz klar. Ich gebe alles, aber es kommt einfach noch nicht. Wir müssen schlichtweg weiterarbeiten und sehen, ob wir für das nächste Rennen einige Verbesserungen erreichen können.“

Werner Daemen, Teammanager BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team: „Ich bin sehr stolz darauf, dass wir den zweiten Platz erreicht haben. Alle drei Fahrer haben einen fantastischen Job gemacht. Niemand ist gestürzt, es war zwar sehr schwierig in der Nacht, als es sehr kalt war, aber alle drei Fahrer kamen mit den Bedingungen gut zurecht, und ich bin sehr stolz auf sie. Sie haben die ganze Woche über Vollgas gegeben, gut zusammengearbeitet, und wir hatten eine sehr gute Atmosphäre im Team. Wir haben gezeigt, dass wir ein starkes Team sind, und ich denke, der zweite Platz ist erst der Anfang einer fantastischen Saison. Ich bin mir zu hundert Prozent sicher, dass wir in Spa, Suzuka und Le Castellet um den Sieg kämpfen können.“

Sylvain Guintoli, BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team (2. Platz 24 Heures Motos): „Es war ein gutes Wochenende. Am Ende haben wir den zweiten Platz belegt, und damit müssen wir zufrieden sein. Wir haben viel gelernt, und es war meine erste Erfahrung mit dem BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team zusammen mit Markus und Ilya. Es war eine gute Erfahrung. Es ist ein wenig schade, dass wir nicht gewonnen haben, weil wir es nach Hause bringen wollten, aber ich bin sicher, dass die gesammelte Erfahrung während dieses Wochenendes und dieses Rennens, das ziemlich hart war, uns helfen wird, in Zukunft besser zu werden. Es ist eine gute Basis, auf der wir für den Rest der Saison aufbauen können.“

Markus Reiterberger, BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team (2. Platz 24 Heures Motos): „Wir sind mit dem zweiten Platz sehr zufrieden. Natürlich hätten wir gern gewonnen, aber in einen so harten, langen Rennen, in dem so viel passiert ist, so viele Stürze und Fehler, sind wir doch recht gut durchgekommen. Wir hatten eine gute Pace, und vor allem in der Nacht waren wir sehr schnell, als es richtig kalt war. Es war aufgrund der Kälte und der tückischen Bedingungen eine echte Herausforderung. Danke an das Team und meine Teamkollegen, die alles gegeben haben. Ich glaube, wir haben gezeigt, dass wir in der Weltmeisterschaft ein Wörtchen mitreden können. Wir wissen auch, wo wir noch den Hebel anlegen müssen, damit wir noch besser werden. Insgesamt war es ein erfolgreiches Wochenende mit dem zweiten Platz bei den 24 Stunden von Le Mans.“

Ilya Mikhalchik, BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team (2. Platz 24 Heures Motos): „Ich bin wirklich glücklich über das Ergebnis. Es war ein sehr schwieriges Rennen, besonders in den Nacht-Stints, als es draußen fast null Grad hatte. Es war ein recht kalt auf dem Motorrad, und die Bedingungen waren tückisch. Aber selbst dann hat unser Bike sehr gut funktioniert, die Reifen haben gut gearbeitet, und alles war in Ordnung. Wir haben um die Podestplätze gekämpft, und am Ende haben wir den zweiten Platz erreicht. Also sind wir sicherlich zufrieden. Vielen Dank an die gesamte Crew, die die ganze Nacht durchgearbeitet hat, und besonders an meine Teamkollegen, die wirklich schnell waren und in allen Stints ihr Bestes gegeben haben, egal wie die Bedingungen waren.“
